James Reese (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) ist ein ehrgeiziger junger Agent, der – getarnt als Assistent des US-Botschafters in Paris – jedoch ein eher ruhiges Dasein führt. Das ändert sich schlagartig, als ihm für einen neuen Fall der ausgebuffte Agent Charlie Wax (John Travolta) zur Seite gestellt wird. Wax ist ein wahrer Albtraum: laut, ordinär und draufgängerisch. Sehr schnell jedoch begreift Reese, dass die unkonventionellen Methoden seines Kollegen sie selbst aus den ausweglosesten Situationen retten. Zunächst auf die Spur von Drogenhändlern angesetzt, erweist sich der Fall rasch als hoch brisant: ein Gipfeltreffen soll das Ziel eines Terroranschlags werden und Reese’ schöne Freundin Caroline (Kasia Smutniak) scheint darin verwickelt zu sein.
